Bromide ions can reduce the sensitivity of the central nervous system and can be made into sedatives to treat epilepsy, neurasthenia and hysteria. Bromine compounds can also be used to make stabilizers to treat heart disease and hyperthyroidism. In addition, organobromine compounds such as bromobutane(C₄H₉Br), bromoethane (C₂H₅Br) and halothane (C₂HBrClF₃) can also be used to make hypnotics.

The important brominated flame retardants in industry mainly include: tetrabromobisphenol A, bromobenzenethiol, tetrabromophthalic anhydride, poly brominated diphenyl ethers, other aromatic bromine flame retardant, alicyclic and cycloaliphatic brominated flame retardants, bromated oligomers and polymers, etc.

Petroleum Industry

Calcium and sodium bromide have the characteristics of high density, low volatility and low corrosivity in water, so it is used as drilling fluid to help with optimizing the development of oil wells.
